Understanding Low Blood Pressure

By: Vascular Pressure

With the excessive but necessary talk about high blood pressure, a lot of people tend to forget that low blood pressure is also a big problem. The definition of low blood pressure is usually associated with fewer than 90 systolic and under 60 diastolic blood pressure levels. Despite all this, people differ and what might be low for a particular person might be acceptable for another and vice versa. In the end, it is only the doctor who can determine with absolute certainty that an individual has low blood pressure or its other counterpart high blood pressure.

Here are some possible signs of low blood pressure which may present themselves frequently:

  • Dizziness

  • Fainting

Of course these things could also be caused by something else entirely which is not related by any means to the con condition known as hypotension. Low blood pressure means the blood is not pumping through the body properly for some reason and this could mean that your organs and cells are not getting the oxygen they need for healthy function. Low blood pressure can also lead to other health conditions and is sometimes an early sign that something else is wrong in the body.

Dizziness and fainting occur often with low blood pressure because the brain is not getting accurate blood flow which deprives the brain of oxygen which it requires to function. This in itself is not really that dangerous (unless it persists for a long time). However, what can happen when you faint can be dangerous or even fatal. For example, if a person with low blood pressure is driving when they have a fainting spell, they could wreck their vehicle and kill themselves or someone else.

If a person were to faint and ended up falling down or hitting their head, the consequences could be equally severe. Anyone with low blood pressure for a substantial amount of time may suffer from damage to important organs of the body due to lack of adequate oxygen which comes from good blood flow. The earlier you realize that you have low blood pressure and work towards resolving it, then the better for you because you will be able to halt the damage that it causes and forestall any future adverse effects it can have on your well-being. Sometimes, the damage which has already been caused may even be reversed as well.

One major problem with low blood pressure is that a lot of people who suffer from it are unaware that they have it and they may also be unaware of what is causing their symptoms. The longer that the condition goes unattended to, then the greater capacity it has to cause more damage. It is essential to seek out medical treatment immediately if you feel you have low blood pressure.

A number of factors such as heredity, diet, other health conditions, etc that can contribute to your low blood pressure and once you learn what these are, you can take out the proper measures to resolve the situation.
